How to make it

Cheese stuffed garlic buns makes an excellent side dish to any pasta dish or indeed a salad. We use a strong cheese such as Westcombe Cheddar for a extremely moreish and long-lasting savoury bite.

  • In a saucepan, heat 175ml water until steaming and then add 50g of cubed butter.
  • Remove from the heat and leave to cool until the mixture is warm
  • Combine the flour, yeast, 1 tbsp sugar and 1 tsp salt
  • Add to the butter mixture and mix to a soft dough
  • Knead until it feels bouncy and smooth
  • Transfer to an oiled bowl and cover with a clean towel, leaving to rise for around 2 hours
  • Oil and line a baking sheet
  • Knock the air out of the dough and knead again for a few minutes
  • Take a 20g piece of dough and flatten into a disc
  • Put a cube of cheddar into the middle of the disc
  • Enclose with the dough, then roll into a ball
  • Repeat with the remaining dough, transferring each ball to the baking sheet
  • Cover with a clean tea towel and leave to prove for another 30 mins
  • Melt 100g of butter then stir in the garlic and rosemary. Take off the heat
  • Heat the oven to  160°C Fan / 320°F / Gas Mark 4
  • Brush the tops of the dough balls with the garlic butter
  • Bake for 25-30 mins until the dough balls are cooked through
  • Serve the cheese stuffed garlic buns warm
